News from the East edition by A J Converse Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
That Mo is up to his usual moves in this latest novel from A. J. Converse. Except this time, he may have met his match in a lovely and mysterious Persian beauty, sort of on the run from her oppressive life in Iran. The way Converse works in his next case, a couple of little old lady con artists (and much more) with the deeper story of Nasreen and her bickering and dangerous family members, takes this story a notch higher than previous capers with Mo. This time Mo has to come up with a real plan to protect Nasreen and her mother from the brother, or was he the uncle, while the father, a sheik, surprises everyone. And then there is the problem of dealing with the murderous old ladies waiting in a darkened house. And in the middle of the action, Mo may have lost his heart forever to Nasreen. Is she the soul mate who finally changes him? Or does he revert to his committed bachelor life? Converse keeps it on the edge the whole way through. Highly recommended.
A fun easy read, for those who live in San Diego or were curious about living in Southern California. News from the East will provide you an adventuresome, juicy read for a day or a weekend. Lots of twists and memorable characters holds your attention to the very end. This not for kids. This novel will have you looking for more from this no nonsense writer!
I enjoy A.J. Converse's writing style. I was hooked from the first book of his that I read. I have been reading more history than fiction lately, but I find his fast-paced style entertaining and I always enjoy his tough-guy characters---who have enough quirks that I find them intriguing. The snappy dialog is perfect for the characters and the book.
I highly recommend that readers give his books a test read.
Strong voice. Fearless in his character development and experience. Contemporary issues. Story pulls you in.
Landscape contractor and vigilante Herman "Mo" Harris runs into two lascivious old ladies and a scintillating Persian beauty in this fast-paced adventure. Mo's faces danger as he chases a quarter mill and a con artist around the world.
In his latest action tale A. J. Converse matches his ambitious Herman Harris, a free-lance adventurer known as Mo, against a clandestine Muslim faction conniving to overthrow the shah of Iran, circa 1974-75. Along the way, Mo and his landscape crew maintain residential lawns
in the small exclusive community of Del Mar, just north of San Diego. But their main income is vigilante work for clients with personal needs the law cannot or will not help with. And that activity leads Mo to the yacht club to check out a possible con artist hustling the wealthy old maid aunts of a client. The promise is a huge financial payoff instantly capturing Mo's attention. So does a lovely young woman Mo meets mooring a boat dockside. Mo figures he can handle the fraud, Dolman, and the beauty, Nasreen--expose one and romance the other. Both activities just about do him in when they overlap.Fortunately, Mo has help from his lawn crew, Swamper, who provides the muscle; Lavere, quick with his knife; and Jimmy-the-Violin, a savant who researches. This Mo is persistent and wise, a thinker and a brawler and, when he has to be, a killer. He can philosophize on love, lust, wealth, religion, abortion, and revolution. Nasreen is one of the author's most-appealing characters to date. She also is a thinker--for herself. Nasreen's wealthy father, an Iranian sheik, has been unable to prevent her
from becoming Westernized, so family conflict is abundant. While Mo becomes entangled in that he wonders why the rich aunts of his client deal with Dolman and live in a house with the stench of death, and he's determined to grab for himself the huge payment to Dolman. Despite Mo's perils, the lawns of Del Mar remain lush and well trimmed.
The further adventures of Mo and his Crew. Always a good read, fast and enjoyable.
This was a different kind book than I usually read It starts off a little weird for me but as it goes, on it falls into place. I enjoyed reading it and liked the way everything fell together at the end. Thanks A.J
